So it’s been a while since we’ve done a trip and we can’t wait to get away. Initially, I started planning a Botswana border patrol trip but decided to put it on ice for now, until after the rainy season. But that did not mean we won’t be going anywhere. At the end of November, we are planning to do a 2-3 week trip to the Cederberg Mountains. This is a region we have gone past, around, and through previously but never really took the time to explore the area and this will be the first of a few such trips.
We’ll be doing mostly camping and while we love the West coast I’ve learned one thing – there is no such thing as a competent government. Most of the camping facilities along the west coast are managed by local municipalities and I’m not sure if it is a Covid thing but everything just went to hell. Not talking about the facilities but about the systems. It took me 2 weeks to find out that the campsite in Strandfontein closed down yet they still have a ‘website’ and you can even find them on a booking site. Trying to get in touch with Dwarskersbos landed me on the website of a guesthouse in Boksburg. So I’ve basically given up and we’ll just settle for some wild camping on the beach.
But this reluctance to take money is not limited to government or municipalities. Even getting any kind of response from private campsites is like pulling teeth from a chicken. Seems like the tourism industry has recovered fully from the Rona. Anyways whatever we cannot confirm we will just wing.
As it stands currently we will be doing ~3500km which excluded the exploration rides on the two ‘rest’ days. The planned route (it will probably change before November) can be seen on the tracker page.
